The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, originally known as the Campus Security Act, is the federal law that requires colleges and universities across the United States to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses. The Clery Act also requires the reporting of crimes in the vicinity of the college, including on property not necessarily owned or maintained by the college. (Empire State College is a nonresidential college.) Schools are required to publish an annual report that contains crime statistics from the three previous years and certain security-policy statements, including sexual assault policies that ensure basic victims' rights, assert the law-enforcement authority of campus police and describe where/how students should report crimes. The report is to be available to all current students and employees. Prospective students and employees are to be notified of the report's existence and may request a copy.
It is the responsibility of the Office of Safety and Security to collect crime reports and distribute the annual crime statistics and report by Oct. 1 of each calendar year.
