Degree Award Process
The degree award process begins once the student has satisfied all requirements for the degree:
- The degree program is concurred (the degree program and portfolio have been approved by the assessment committee and by the Office of the Registrar).
- All studies for the degree are completed.
If all is in order, the student will be recommended for their degree by their school (School of Undergraduate Studies, School of Graduate Studies, School of Nursing, or Harry Van Arsdale Jr. School of Labor Studies). Students should contact their primary mentor with questions or concerns regarding the recommendation process.
Once the student is recommended for their degree, the Office of the Registrar reviews the student’s academic records to determine that all courses on the approved degree program are completed and that all other degree requirements are met. The Office of the Registrar assigns an official graduation date once the academic clearance is finished. The processing time varies for this step and can range from six to eight weeks in peak times.
Students can expect to receive their diploma by mail approximately three weeks from the day the college awarded the degree.
An Empire State College diploma is a 10 x 13 inch paper document, and it will provide the following information: student’s name, degree, and award date. The degree award date will be the first day of the month following the completion of all academic requirements. The area of study and concentration or major will not show on the diploma; however, they are located on the student’s official transcript. Official transcripts can be ordered online.
