SUNY Empire State College’s Metropolitan New York region serves more than 2,000 students annually, drawing from the vibrant communities and neighborhoods of the five boroughs of New York City — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and the Bronx. The region is is home to more than 8,000 alumni.

Mentoring personalizes education. Faculty mentors work with each student pursuing a degree, from registration through graduation. Mentors help undergraduate students develop a degree plan that best supports individual needs and interests. An important element in planning is assessment for credit of college-level prior learning through life and work experience. Mentors help students shape and submit these requests for credit.

Study options are designed to provide flexibility for learners. The Metropolitan region offers many study groups, which are small seminars that meet once a week. Thematic residencies that combine independent study with a weekend conference experience also are offered by our center. Guided independent study allows you and the faculty mentor to work one-to-one. Online study is also an option, or students can blend study approaches to meet students’ unique needs.

Our faculty help students design degrees in all the subjects offered by the college. Popular subject choices are business, community and human services, performing and visual arts, psychology and the new public affairs area, which, depending on individual goals and interests, may include focused study of public administration, community development and advocacy, criminal justice and emergency management.

Our locations in Manhattan’s Tribeca, downtown Brooklyn and Staten Island provide excellent resources for study. In October 2011, we opened a new floor of classroom, seminar, computer lab and study lounge space in Manhattan, an elegant and professional setting in which to learn.

We are a warm and welcoming community, dedicated to the success of students. All of us in the Metropolitan New York region are looking forward to working with you.
