Sandra Barkevich, editor
Sandra Barkevich is an alumna of SUNY Empire State College’s Center for Distance Learning with a Bachelor of Science in Business, Management and Economics and a student in the School for Graduate Studies. She projects she will complete her studies and receive a Master of Arts in Learning and Emerging Technologies in 2015. Utilizing the knowledge and experience gained through her studies and work at the college, Barkevich founded a writing and editorial services business in 2013 and plans to design and offer online courses in both of her fields of expertise, business and writing/editing.
Barkevich was named editor of the online student newsletter, The Student Connection, in December 2011. She loves working with fellow students, faculty and staff. She received 2015 Empire State College Student Service Award, 2014 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence and was recognized in 2013 as one of the Hispanic Coalition New York’s 40 Under 40 Rising Latino Stars.
In addition, Barkevich serves on the Student Affairs Committee as student co-chair, as well as student representative for the School for Graduate Studies, alumni representative on the Center for Distance Learning Student and Alumni Advisory Group and as a student representative on the Alumni/Student Federation Board of Governors. She also is pursuing publication as a novelist and is a member of Romance Writers of America.
“Despite our often limited time, I think it’s important for adult learners to be involved with more than just their course studies,” she said. “We can learn so much from each other, just as surely as we learn from our instructors. Whether we’re reading or contributing our own works to The Student Connection, it’s a chance for us to gain something deeper from our college experience. I’m proud to be a part of it.”
