On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the second Student Affairs Committee sponsored Social Responsibility Forum was held. The main venue was the Harry Van Arsdale Center, but the forum was viewed at centers across the state through video conference and was broadcast on esc-tv. The theme for the enthusiastically received forum was volunteerism: “Getting by with a Little Help from My Friends.” This forum centered on stories about efforts in the Hurricane Sandy relief in NYC as a way to highlight the need, the opportunities and the benefits of volunteerism.
Panelist, Danny Ferreyra, an Empire State College student, was a volunteer and panelist, Stephen Flynn, an adjunct professor, was a victim of Hurricane Sandy. Each talked about the mutual benefit of their spirits being lifted, and it was apparent that, in addition to the victims being relieved, the volunteers came away with a great sense of accomplishment.
Panelist, Kate Spaulding, also an Empire State College adjunct, spoke about her volunteer efforts from a young age and told how volunteering actually led to her present job. Spaulding expressed how volunteering keeps your resume current, builds your skills, and shows a potential employer your interests.
Students were reminded that volunteer opportunities are not only present during emergencies. Small efforts count every day and are sometimes farther reaching then we know. We learned that our students across the state have read to kindergartners, mentored younger students and volunteered at an animal shelter among many other efforts. Volunteer opportunities in your area can be found on the Social Responsibility website.
The third and final forum for the academic year, Reading Is Fundamental: Literacy in Our Schools and Around the Globe, is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 19. Check out the Social Responsibility website for more information and to register.
