U.S. Representative Dan Maffei (D - Syracuse), third from the left, visited SUNY Empire State College, Central New York Center, in Syracuse on Thursday, Dec. 19. Maffei met with Dean Nikki Shrimpton, Associate Dean Mike Gillespie and Michael Mancini, director of community and government relations. Wayne Britton, a college alumus and a current graduate student at the college, also joined the group. Britton is one of the founding members of the collegewide Student Veterans and Military Club and he shared his experiences as a student veteran at the college. Maffei is a member of the Committee on Armed Services and wanted to learn more about how Empire State College serves active duty military and student veterans.
Shrimpton said, “We appreciated the congressman’s interest in meeting with us and hope to collaborate with his office to offer support for veterans seeking access to higher education.”
Mancini delivered a presentation to Maffei and his staff regarding the economic impact the college has on the 24th Congressional District. The district is home to 895 students who are engaged members of the community, with strong roots in the district. Also, 87 employees of the college live in Maffei’s district, highlighting the importance of the college as a community partner.
Maffei was impressed by Empire State College’s innovative approach to education and is interested in being a guest presenter during an upcoming learning community meeting. CNYC offers fall, spring and summer learning community opportunities for students in business, human services and the arts.
Maffei has taught in the past at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
