SUNY Empire State College student Nicole Velez (www.nicolevelez.com site no longer available), pictured, was featured on the State University of New York Facebook page on
Tuesday, March 29. She recently exhibited photos in the All SUNY show in Albany, where her work earned the attention that resulted in the spotlight.
Velez is a combination of frankness and subtlety. As a person and as an artist she spells out her opinions but also inspires feelings and ideas that her audience will reflect on long afterwards. Although new to photography as a profession, she has always been talented at working with images, whether moving or still. A New York City native and current resident, Velez finds the constant motion of the place filled with both content and inspiration which infuse her photography with surrealism and animation.
As a student at SUNY Empire State College, she has developed a definite style as well as built knowledge of lighting, printing and digital editing. She notes that faculty members have been instrumental in helping her shape her artistic vision, encouraging professionalism and supporting her to achieve her goals. “SUNY can be challenging,” she says, adding that the guidance of her mentors is vital to her productivity.
Velez has produced a book of her own past photography and is currently working toward an exhibit.
