SUNY ESC Offers Scholarships in Haiti Through CDL to Help Rebuild Nation

SUNY Empire State College is offering 20 scholarships to Haitian college students through the Emergency Scholarship Program for Haiti offered by the Organization of American States (OAS). The scholarships will allow Haitian college students to select from five courses offered by SUNY Empire State College for the January term, in addition to courses offered by other colleges and universities.
The Organization of American States developed the Emergency Scholarship Program for Haiti to enable Haitian students to pursue studies at a distance with the goal of contributing to the capacity of the Haitian nation to rebuild after the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti in January 2010.
Through the Emergency Scholarship Program for Haiti, the Organization of American States will offer scholarships for university studies, via the Internet and training and professional development of teachers in partnership with approved institutions of higher education. Only Haitians living in Haiti are entitled to apply for scholarships.
“Everyone is aware of what an enormous impact the earthquake had on Haiti, interrupting life at its most basic and fundamental levels,” said President Alan R. Davis. “While there has been an outpouring of support globally to help this hard-hit country, we view educating its workforce as something concrete that we, as a college, can contribute to the rebuilding of Haiti. Ultimately, it is the Haitian people who will move forward to restore their own country, and we are honored to be able to, in some positive way, help out.”
The courses available through SUNY Empire State College's Center for Distance Learning are: Introduction to Human Services, Management Principles, Marketing Principles, Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Introduction to Emergency Management. All are offered online and run for 15 weeks. Registration for the term starts Nov. 15 and the OAS scholarship application deadline is Nov. 30.
SUNY Empire State College will waive tuition for the 20 OAS/Empire State College scholarship recipients who will participate in the five courses. The OAS will select the scholarship recipients through its own recruitment and selection process and refer nominees to the college for approval.
