Student Affairs Committee
Report to Senate
October 6, 2006

The Student Affairs Committee had a conference call on September 19, 2006. The discussed the progress of three sub-committees:

  • The Student All-College Conference Subcommittee reported that there were so many excellent proposals for the conference that some were turned away. There was a discussion regarding funding for students to attend the conference. Some deans support students who are presenting at the Conference. Some students have to pay everything. This is a hardship for some students who would clearly benefit from attending the conference. Additionally, some committee members suggested that students who staff and organize the conference should have their expenses covered. Larry Reynolds offered to donate $500. to the scholarship fund to pay student expenses for the conference. This issue will be addressed when SAC negotiates its next budget.
  • The Students Assisting Students Subcommittee will continue to seek ways for student SAC representatives to assist students college-wide. The committee plans to discuss our plans for a student website and other issues at our face-to-face meeting on October 17, 2006.
  • The Student Affairs Committee Newsletter subcommittee reported that the newsletter is in progress. The committee welcomes student and faculty submissions. We discussed putting bios of the student SAC representatives into the newsletter.

Other items discussed include the upcoming transition to ANGEL and its impact on CDL students, student responses to the new registration system, and student access to scholarships. The committee agreed to students need to be better informed about available scholarships.

Respectfully submitted,

Dr. Anna Bates, Faculty/Staff co-chair
