The text below is a transcript of the video about online courses.

So you're thinking of taking a college course online? My name is Diana and I am here to show you what its all about.

At Empire State College, the Center for Distance Learning offers SUNY-quality classes available 24 hours a day 7 days week, right at your fingertips. If you have a computer with Internet access and want to work toward your degree, we offer hundreds of courses, across all areas of study, in topics like business, art, criminal justice, computer science and more.

With distance-learning courses, there are no pre-scheduled class times. You purchase textbooks, participate in online discussions with your peers and instructors, and work independently to complete your assignments within your weekly schedule.

Thousands of students across the country - and throughout the world - have earned their degree online. From the Empire State College website, your courses -- and your college degree are just a few clicks away!

The courses are organized in a way that makes it easy for students to find what they’re looking for. As an example, let’s look at a course called Caribbean History and Culture. Required course materials may include textbooks, videos, scholarly articles and online resources. The material in each module, or unit, is previewed in an overview page. Optional interactive presentations harness the web to accommodate a variety of learning styles Smart objects allow students to immerse themselves into the subject matter.

Discussion is integral to online courses, whether centered on focused questions or within a wiki or blog. The student lounge offers a virtual student meeting area. Ask a question offers a space to share questions or help other students. The icebreaker discussion area allows students to first get to know each other.

Instructor announcements, online office hours, course mail, and live chats bridge the gap between classroom and computer. Helpful resources are always at hand, through video tutorials and knowledgebase articles. And remember, the helpdesk is always just a phone call away.

In the end, learning online can be fun, challenging and convenient.
